A new stronger, safer pint glass has been developed and is currently in testing. The Ultimate Pint is supposed to be five times stronger than current offerings and has been designed in such a way as to shatter so the glass cannot be used as a weapon. There are currently 87,000 violent incidents involving glassware each year and this product along with other safer glass products could go some way to help reduce this. There was on average a 4% increase in sales in April, major pub and restaurant groups reported. Due to the Easter holiday, Bank holidays, Royal Wedding and warm weather sales were up. However a closer look shows that all is not as good as it seems. Experts were predicting a higher turn out and figures show that compared to Easter 2010 sales were actually down by 7%. Pubs and restaurants had a hard time convincing people to head out rather than watch the wedding at home or spend time with friends in the garden enjoying a BBQ. With interest rates held yet again the hospitality industry gets more breathing space to help recover. However is the hold going to benefit us or are we holding off the inevitable? Everybody seems to accept that rates will have to rise and probably in the not too distant future with inflation on the constant creep upwards. If rates are continuously held and inflation not capped do we not run the risk of needing to increase rates more than just a quarter of a percent? Maybe it’s better to increase the rate slowly and sooner than later rather than a bigger response being required in the future if inflation starts to run away. Whatever the outcome the industry needs to prepare for the inevitable increase that will see a drop in consumer spending.
